In the city of Melbourne in Australia, few hours ago, just after I snapped this picture wondering what was going on, I was handed a leaflet. The heading read: “No Justice, No Peace. Hold Racist Vigilantes to Account.” It continued: “On August 29, a 14-year-old indigenous man, Elijah Doughty, was found dead, having been hit by a car while riding a motorbike. This tragic and senseless death was likely the result of racist vigilantism. But Elijah’s killer, who faced court the next day, is being charged with manslaughter rather than murder.” Armed riot police, police on horseback and dozens of other police made a rather significant appearance. Apart for a few pushbikes, trams, cars and other means of transport came to a standstill.
